Scribe January 24

Due on FEBRUARY 28 is the new project we were given. It's a group video were you have to explain why we should or should not give money for an endangered animal. Make your groups now and start shooting. remember it should be interesting and should make the audience want to watch. You need research to persuade the audience for your cause.
In class today we watched the rest of the video and learned a lot about Darwin and his discovery's on the islands. We learned that finches on the islands are a great example of evolution. On each island there are different finches because on each island there are different size seeds. Also if there is a drought through natural selection bigger birds with larger seeds will survive because there will be larger seeds. the large birds will breed because they will survive to reproduce and the next generation will be a bigger size. but if it rains a lot the opposite will happen and the smaller birds will bread so the next generation will be smaller.

As animals moved to different islands they change because of natural selection. They do this in order to survive. Natural selection is a change that occurs in an organism to survive when the animal needs to adapt to the environment around him.

I found this really cool paper on natural geographic about a island with mini animals and people, like a mini elephant a mini Komodo dragon and more here is the link. its cool cause its also got to do with evolution.

Sickle Cell Disease

Sickle cell disease is inherited by both the parents passing a defective copy of the Gene. If one parent passes it down while the other dose not that child is a carrier. Less oxygen can travel to the organs of the person who has this disease causing the organs to die. Red blood cells of the people with the disease live less than normal red blood cells so people have a low anemia. Sickle cells get stuck and cause pain to the affected person. People who have this live 30 years less than normal people. Most states routinely check newborns for the disease but if not there is a test called hemoglobin electrophoresis which you can take to see if you are affected or carrier. Most people with this take a dose of penicillin a day and folic acid. People who have this also get blood transplants to get healthy blood cells. This disease mostly affects African Americans in America. 1 out of every 500 African Americans in america are affected.

class on 10/4

We started class with Mrs. Stein assigning our homework which was to make two definition maps of the two words you were given. We did cell organelle review which should be on moodle. we looked at our notes from last night and talked about the lesson. we learned ATP is a chemical molecule that stores and releases energy. also a chemical equation should always have reactants first then products. we learned to get from ADP to ATP we need to add phosphate from food. cells release energy by breaking phosphate. also in order for chemical reactions oxygen is needed. after we reviewed she gave us five minutes to start our pre lab sheet.

Mario

Mario is one of the most well known and popular video game characters. He has many games including: super smash bros., Mario kart, Super Mario Bros. and more. He has been around since the early 1980's. Mario is an Italian plumber who has a brother Luigi who is also a plumber. Together they go on missions to save Princess Peach from Bowser. Mario's first apperiance was in the game called Donkey Kong where he battled Donkey Kong for Princess Peach but later mario battles bowser. thats why i love mario and u should try it too.

Unit one Reflection

Unit one was very interesting, but sometimes confusing. I had trouble getting used to doing Homework but i think i got it know. I had fun times doing labs especially the tetrahymina lab. I also liked the Mexican jumping bean lab it was fun to make our own lab. I hope the rest of the year is fun and i look forward to future labs
