Today in class we reviewed Darwin and Lamarck in UP 13.
Question 1 - Mutations and genetic recombination are responsible for variations among offspring. Answer: neither, because no body knew about DNA at this time.
Question 2 - There is a struggle for existence among organisms. Answer: Darwin only because he believed that organisms compete and only the fittest will survive.
Question 3 - Modern giraffes are descendants of short-necked ancestors. Answer: Lamarck only because he believed in acquired characteristics.
Question 4 - Two mice whose tails hab been cut off should produce offspring with no tails. Answer: Lamarck only
Question 5 - There is a tendency towards overproduction in nature. Answer: Darwin only because the species overproduce to make sure they pass down their genes.
Question 8 - If you lift weights, your children will be born with strong muscles. Answer: Lamarck only.
Question 14 - All organisms have an inborn urge to better themselves and become more fit for their environment; thus birds developed wings because of this urge. Answer: Lamarck.
We also completed Lab 38, which was based on eveidence for evolution. There was questions about vestigial structures, comparative embryology, and we also colored a picture of different animals bones.

Maple Syrup Urine Disease

Maple syrup urine disease is a disorder that is passed down genetically. People with this disease cannot break down some proteins, resulting in urine that smells like maple syrup. This disease is caused by a gene defect, in which the amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine cannot be broken down. The affect of not being able to break the amino acids down is a buildup of these chemicals in the blood. If this disease is untreated, it can lead to seizures, comas, and death. Maple syrup is not very common, only affecting about 1 in every 185,000. The genes related to this disease are mutations in the BCKDHA, BCKDHB, DBT, and DLDD genes. These genes provide instructions for making proteins for breaking down the certain amino acids. This disease is AUTOSOMAL RECESSIVE, so people can be a carrier of the disease, but show no symptoms. If not treated, this disease is very deadly, so for a treatment, a special diet is needed to follow. This diet may be a protein free diet, or avoiding eating foods with the amino acids leucine, isoleucine, and valine.

Today in class, we reviewed the differences and similarities between Bacterial and Viral diseases. After reviewing the differences, we took our quiz on Chapter 20, and section 35.1. The homework is UP 12. The disease of the day was Schistosomiasis.

Viral Diseases:

destroys cell by interfering with DNA
destroys cells by bursting them
NOT treated with antibiotics
Bacterial:
release toxins
treated with antibiotics
can be controlled
Similarities:
may be prevented by antibiotics
mutate, adapt, evolve
destroys cells
caused by pathogens
disrupts homeostasis
spread in similar ways

Class on 10/3
Today we started off by taking a pop quiz that ended up not counting for our grade. Mrs Stein made a story about a cake factory and we had to make anologys to the cell parts. Everyone was very worried about doing bad on it, but was relieved after she told us it is not for a grade. After that we did a powerpoint with brief notes on parts of the cell, which is all on moodle. Then we learned how to do the SQ3R notes, and that is the homework for tonight. (8.1, 9.1, 9.2) The SQ3R stands for survey, question, read actively, recite what you learned, and review the main ideas.

JayJ Unit 1 Reflection
Unit 1 was a good first unit for me. At first I had no clue what most of the stuff meant, but after tie reviewing I knew most of the material. Also, I didn't remember the parts of the microscope and things about it which is important, and we reviewed that also. Learning about tetrahymena and making hypothesis about it and identifying the control group, independent and dependent variables was a good review. Unit 1 was also very interesting to observe microscopic organism and observe them. I am looking forward to many great units to come, just like this one.
