Blooms Syndrome
Blooms syndrome is an inherited birth disorder. People diagnosed with Blooms syndrome are very short and weigh very little when they are born. On average, they only reach about 5 ft at the tallest when they are adults. Blooms syndrome causes the affected to have a very different and uncommon face. They typically have a long narrow face, a larger nose, and a high pitched voice. Men that have Blooms syndrome are unable to produce sperm. The disorder is most common in central and eastern Europe. One third of the affected are Ashkenazi Jews.
Sister chromatid exchange: left is normal and right is Blooms syndrome.
The condition is inherited by the auotosomal recessive pattern. The parents that produce a baby with this disorder are typically both carriers of the recessive/mutated gene. But, this does not mean that the parents have the disorder, they are carriers, not the affected.
Many with this syndrome are more prone to being diagnosed with cancer and diabetes. Many have severe troubles with learning. They also have many infections to the ears, respiratory tract, and lungs during their infancy.

Today in class, we discussed our last disease of the day. The disease was lyme disease. The agent of this disease is bacteria. The vector of this disease is the mosquito. Then, for the rest of class we reviewed for the TEST TOMORROW. We went over the quiz we took yesterday, and watched a
few short clips to review. The review session for our disease and immunity test will be
tomorrow morning, so make sure you try to make it of you have any questions!

Breck's Muddiest Point
The Point that I am mixing up a lot are the different names for the relationships of animals. I know that the 3 are called mutualism, parasitism, and commensalism, but I mix up which means which.
Class on 9/16!!

Today in class, we went outside for "lab 58". In this lab, we each got a marked off area of grass, and we searched for different plant populations within the marked off squared area. Then for homework, we finished the data tables and analysis questions. This was due on 9/19. Also, we continued to take data on our duckweed experimentt. We touched base with out groups to see how the research precess was going along. Presentations for the duckweed lab will be due on Friday 9/23, so make sure your group is prepared and ready to present next Friday! Lab 58 can be found in your bio lab book. Mrs. Stein has these in her cabinets, and the lab is in them. The other homework for this weekend is to read 4.1 in your book, and make a comparison chart on 6.2 and 6.4. Breck M's Unit 1 Reflection
Unit 1 of STS Biology was a great way to start off the year. I learned a lot of new information and reviewed some information. I refreshed my memory on the different types of variables, and learned a new way of performing labs. I also reviewed how to write a hypothesis and learned a new way to write them as well.
I learned about the "scientific method". I now know that the first step is to ask a question, and then to form a hypothesis and test that hypothesis. We also did a lab on Tetrahymena. I learned a lot of new information during that lab and also refreshed my memory on how to perform a lab. I also learned the parts of a microscope. I used to be confused on a lot of things with the microscope, but that was cleared up during this unit. I think this will be a great Biology class and I look forward to the the rest of the year!
Breck M's First Post- John Mayer
“Any Given Thursday” is a collection of live music that was put together from his concerts in 2003. The live version of all of these songs proves once again that Mayer is a truly gifted singer and guitar player. Some of his best work is when he is performing live. "Any Given Thursday" is also a movie of him performing live. Mayer's music is timeless and great for any occasion.
What am I most excited about?- Sport seasons, meeting new people, and going to school with old friends.
What am I least excited about?- The homework!
