Class on March 7th, 2012

Today in class, we discussed photosynthesis, the structures that make up a leaf and their functions, and energy.
The plant of the day were "Living Stones" or Lithops lesleie
-Succulent - plant which had the ability to store water
-Two fused leaves with few stomata, modified to prevent evaporation
-Mimics the color and appearence of rocks-less obvious to foraging animals
-Produces yellow or white flowers
-Native to South Africa and Nambia
Plant structure were reviewed, key structures include...
-Upper Epidermis
-Vascular Tissue (water transport tissue)
-Spongy Mesophyll (cells are loosely packed to allow easy gas exchange!)
-Cuticle
-Palisade Mesophyll
-Stoma
-Guard Cells
-Lower Epidermis
We discussed energy, specifically the questions on page 61 of the unit packet.
Homework:
-UP 67-68 (Due Tomorrow)
-READ 8.2 and 8.3 with... (Due Friday)
+UP 81-85
OR
+at least 2 pages of well-done cornell notes

Peter F's Muddiest Point

Where does the energy from ATP go? Does it only service it's own cell? ...and why does having only two molecules of phosphate in ADP have less energy, as opposed to having three in ATP?

Class on 10/10/2011

Today in class we discussed the PLASMOLYSIS LAB. We went over what the cells should have looked like when both normal and plasmolyzed. Observations should have looked like this:

Normal Elodea Leaf

Plasmolyzed Elodea Leaf (Salt Water)

The ENZYME LAB was discussed and is due tomorrow. Data:

Group Name Temperature (Centigrade) Height of Bubble Column (mm)

0°------------------------------------1°-----------------------------------------------------2.5
15°----------------------------------15°-------------------------------------------------------1
22°----------------------------------20°------------------------------------------------------1
35°----------------------------------37°-----------------------------------------------------27
55°----------------------------------57°------------------------------------------------------0
100°--------------------------------100°-----------------------------------------------------0

Vocabulary:
•Osmosis - the process by which water diffuses through a semi-permeable membrane.
•Equilibrium - a state of physical balance; forces or influences are balanced.
•Cytolysis - (cyto means cell; lysis means break) The disruption or dissolution of a cell, due to the
rupture of the cell membrane

Now, for the rest of the unit, the topic will be cancer. We took a survey online and filled out a chart in our UP on page 55. The survey can be found here . There is a cancer research paper due on 10/25. The chart will be needed for the paper. The rubric was handed out in class, ask Mrs. Stein for a copy if needed.

Cell Parts & Functions Practice

I found a really great online activity, it is loaded with information on both plant and animal cells. Each of the different parts (Ex: mitochondria, Golgi apparatus, etc.) are focused on individually. There is also great animation to help you recognize what is what. I know it helped me a lot!

Muddiest Point

How and why do ozone molecules trap heat? If ozone disallows heat to pass out of the atmosphere, then why is so much of the direct heat from the sun be allowed to enter the atmosphere?
