Class on 2/24 and 2/25
Today in class we looked over the two plants of the day. The first one we looked over was the VENUS FLY TRAP. The second one we looked over was the BASEBALL PLANT.
We went over the 4 characteristics of the plant kingdom.
1. Eukaryotic
2. Photosynthesis, autotrophic, and contains chloroplasts.
3. Cell wall with cellulose2. Photosynthesis, autotrophic, and contains chloroplasts.
3. Cell wall with cellulose2. Photosynthesis, autotrophic, and contains chloroplasts.
4. Multicellular
We also talked about the phylogenetic tree. The Green Algae and the Mosses have to live in moist environments due to the fact that they do not contain true - water conducting tissues.
We also went over our quiz.
Things plants need to survive.
1. CO2 for photosynthesis.
2. water for photosynthesis.
3. sunlight (energy)
4. minerals (nitrogen)
5. O2 for cellular respiration!
- Plant's mitochondria get glucose from photosynthesis.
Challenges for plants moving from water to land.
1. The ability to obtain water some way.
2. Prevent from dying due to direct sunlight
3. REPRODUCTION

Huntington's disease

Huntington's Disease is a disorder in which the nerve cells in certain brain parts are wasted. HD is inherited by parents. Huntington's Disease is a genetic defect that take place on chromosome 4. There are no known treatments yet for HD. The main goal is to slow down the symptoms. People with HD usually die within 15-20 years. The HD itself is a reason people die, but another common reason is suicide. There are 2 forms of HD. The more common one develops at the age of mid 30's and 40's. The more rare type develops at a young age. If the parents have HD there is a 50% chance that the child will also have it.
Symptoms
Behavioral disturbances
Hallucinations
Irritability
Moodiness
Restlessness or fidgeting
Paranoia
Psychosis

Scribe Post
Today in class 10/21/11 we watched a movie called Surgery - Semmelweis and Lister. This movie is about a scientist that figures out a reason why so many women died while giving birth. He noticed that more women died when people who performed an autopsy delivered the baby. Semmelweis came up with the hypothesis, If you do or do not perform autopsy, then the chance of a women dying while giving birth will or will not go down. Some interesting facts were it took 6 years for death rates to drop from 30% to 1% while women were giving birth.
Our homework is The Cancer Paper is due 10/25 and Read 20.1 and write 6 types of questions. Must give complete answers. Due 10/24

The Nature of Science
I enjoyed the first unit of science. I think that it was a great and fascinating way to start off the year. We also got a chance to work on labs which helped us get to know each other more. During the first unit, I have learned many new thing as well as old things. I learned new words such as; biosphere, biotic, abiotic, what levels of organizations are, and what an ecosystem is. Some of the things that reviewed was the different variables. The different variables were, independent, dependent, controlled variable, and control group. Also we reviewed on the outline of writing a hypothesis. Another thing that I reviewed was how to use a microscope. We learned how to form a conclusion. Also we learned the difference between qualitative and quantitative. The last thing that we learned about was organize and tell the difference between line, bar, and pie graphs.
