GabbyM's Muddiest Point

My muddiest point is food webs and food chains. What I mean by this is I don't understand the difference between food webs and food chains. Also, I am having some trouble with the biomass pyramid. I don't understand how the greatest biomass is located at the bottom of the pyramid and not the top.

  1. So to start off, a food chain is a bunch of organisms linked together. For example, Algae---> Zooplankton---> Herring---> Trout, this would be a food chain. A food web is a more complex food chain (like above) and it describes the relationships between the organisms. To see a food web example, you can look on page 13 in your Ecology packet.

The greatest biomass is located at the bottom of the pyramid because if you think about it, the mass of the the plants and grain in the world is greater than the mass of animals. The mass of animals is greater than the mass of humans. So can you see why the greatest biomass is on the bottom? (I apologize if my answers aren't straight-on correct)
