Vertebrates have backbones, or a spinal cord. Chordates have a notochord, nerve chord, and a tail. If you are a vertebrate, you can fit into the broader category, (Chordate) but if you do not have a backbone, you can still have the other features of chordates. This is why all vertebrates are chordates, but not all chordates are vertebrates.
